The Contract Modeling Tool is an internal web app used by Cigna to draft potential contracts with clients (providers and medical facilities) and perform financial modeling of the proposed contracts. The tool uses past claim data repriced under current and proposed schedules to determine the financial impact (unit cost, trend, etc.) of such proposed schedules.
The legacy tool was extremely outdated, not user-friendly and lacked many of the features that contract writers needed to do their day-to-day work. Additionally, the contracts can be extremely complex. The tool needed to support many types of contracts and facility types, each with hundreds of their own idiosyncrasies.
Redesigning this complex product demanded an exceptional level of cross-team collaboration, primarily with the engineering team. I closely partnered with engineering leads, actively participating in their meetings and engaging in collaborative efforts with external teams to gain a deeper understanding of the data flow. Additionally, I created prototypes and conducted multiple rounds of user testing, involving the contract writers who would ultimately utilize the tool. The updated tool made its debut with a group of 60 contract writers, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. Their satisfaction stemmed from the much-improved user experience and the newfound capabilities of the application. We maintained an iterative design process, consistently incorporating user feedback, and the tool has now become an indispensable resource for several hundred contract writers.
